Would be very cool if one of these were included by default in Open Emu. CRT-caligari and CRT-cgwg pretty much eradicate the pixel doubling in favor of a slight blurring, but done in a way much less "Did I go blind?" muddy that the Linear Filter results in. If you have any information on the scaling the 3DS utilizes I'd be happy to take a look.Ĭlobber: Yeah, that was exactly what I meant, it's still approximated, of course, but the end result looks much nicer. Once we get advanced core preferences in, square pixel aspect ratio will definitely be an option, but for now I'd recommend to use some kind of CRT shader (that also solves the issue of pseudo-transparency). I don't know of any shader that improves this, I assume clobber was thinking of those that limit the output to integer scaling. The effect of uneven pixel doubling gets smaller with larger resolutions anyways. This is of course unfeasible for almost every setup. So 4480x3360 is the smallest resolution where you get perfect pixel doubling and aspect ratio correction. Now to get perfect pixel doubling you'd want to not just stretch from 224 to 240 but to get the least common multiple of the two.

In this case the y-axis gets stretched to 240: 320/240=4/3 Let's take 320x224 for the sake of this argument, common Genesis resolution. There's no way to do perfect pixel doubling and aspect ratio correction in most cases. It's not perfect, but it does look better than the double-wide pixels you see in my example. The 3DS attempts to capture the original aspect ratio of the NES games it emulates by aliasing every few columns together. Would the toggle you mention achieve this? But pretty much all the other options have some form of the non-uniform look that I find very distracting. Using the Linear option is by far the best bet, but I find the resulting picture too blurry for my tastes. Is there any plans to improve how Open Emu handles the scaling? Perhaps uniformly modifying the size of pixels instead of given column/rows? Is that even possible? Forgive my ignorance on the subject. I do appreciate using the "proper" ratio is ideal, and when you play these games with 1 for 1 pixels (as on most emulators, or in Gameboy/DS ports of these games), you're actually getting a picture narrower than intended by the original console.īut the way OpenEmu handles this is sort of.well.unsightly. I actually thought that might be the case, that the emulator is just trying to convey the original aspect ratio for the game.
